Most fall guides for small Southern towns read like a list of pumpkin patches. Camden's actually reads like a scheduling problem. Between the last week of September and the middle of October, downtown fits a Revolutionary War commemoration, a horse-country gala, a Southern literary festival, a pirate weekend at a historic site, and a 30-year-old fire safety festival into blocks you can walk between. The trick isn't finding something to do. It's deciding which Saturday to give up.
If you already live here, the useful move is to work backward from one weekend: October 9 through 12. Almost everything else on the fall calendar orbits it.
Circle October 9–12 First
Two events collide on the same weekend, and they pull from opposite sides of Camden's identity.
The first is the Southern Gothic Festival, running October 9–10 across multiple downtown venues. It's a two-day gathering of writers, historians, folklorists, and musicians built around Southern literature, folklore, and history, with panels, performances, and a "Southern Gothic Ghosts" lantern tour on the 10th run through Historic Camden.
The second is Camden Horse & Hound Weekend, which the Camden Hunt Conservancy and Hickory Top Farm co-host across three venues. The weekend features the Denim & Diamonds Gala at Cool Springs Plantation on Friday evening, October 10th, the Horse & Hound Expo at Springdale Race Course on Saturday, October 11th, and the Charity Polo Match on Sunday, October 12th at the Camden Polo Field. Gala tickets run $150 per person.
The reason to plan around this weekend isn't that it's the biggest. It's that the two events don't compete for the same audience, so the town holds double the crowd without either one feeling thin. If you want the literary side Thursday and Friday and the sporting side Saturday and Sunday, you can do both without leaving Kershaw County.
What September Gives You To Warm Up
September is where Camden quietly stacks its family-oriented calendar. Three things worth putting on the fridge:
Historic Camden's Pirate Fest, September 17–19. The site runs a Pirate Lantern Tour on the 17th, Pirate Fest: Eventide on the 18th, and the Parley of Pirates & Scalawags on the 19th. Ticket bundles for the full weekend are available through historiccamden.org.
Springdale 5K, Saturday, September 12. An 8 a.m. start at Springdale Race Course, which most locals only see during Carolina Cup weekend in spring. Running the same turf without 65,000 people on it is one of the better small pleasures of fall in Kershaw County.
30th Annual Camden Fire Fest, Saturday, September 26 at Camden City Arena. The annual Camden Fire Fest is celebrating 30 years, and the family-friendly event lets residents and visitors learn about fire prevention and fire safety while enjoying live firefighting demonstrations and competitions, a live burn, and antique fire trucks. Thirty years is not a rounding number. If you moved here in the last five, this is the event most longtime neighbors will assume you already know.
The Rest Of October's Calendar
Circling the anchor weekend leaves two other dates worth guarding.
Battle of Camden, Saturday, October 3, at Camden City Arena. The fall festival tied to one of the most significant Revolutionary War battles fought on South Carolina soil. Expect competition BBQ alongside the history programming, and expect it to be crowded. It runs across a full weekend in November as well, but the October kickoff is the one most locals plan around.
CMC's 11th Annual Oysters & BBQ Bash, Thursday, October 15. The event features steamed oysters, BBQ, beer, wine, and music, with dinner provided by B.Colson / Haile Street Grill, and takes place from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Camden City Arena. A Thursday-night event five days after Horse & Hound is either brilliant scheduling or the reason everyone in town looks a little tired by the 20th. Both, probably.

Where To Land Between Events
Festivals are the spine. The rest of the season lives in the places you already drive past on Broad Street.
The one to know if you haven't been yet is Greener Pastures Brewing Co. at 826 Broad St. It opened in September 2025 as the first craft brewery in Kershaw County, and it's already become the default answer for "meet you somewhere downtown." The family- and pet-friendly beer garden has outdoor space between its taproom and brewing area, and offers 14 taps including IPAs, sour beers, light lagers, and stouts, with gluten-free cider, prosecco, and house-made seltzers also on tap. The kitchen runs Neapolitan-style pizza out of a brick oven you can watch from the seating area. It hosts Trivia Night on Tuesdays. During Horse & Hound weekend, expect it to be the informal after-hours room for both crowds.
Worth noticing that the ownership story is local. Co-owner Roland Matthews returned to his hometown after college football coaching stints at Methodist University and Presbyterian College, and he opened the brewery with business partner Ross Hough, a fellow Camden native and former Amazon worker. When Matthews explained the timing, he pointed to something specific rather than general enthusiasm. He cited census estimates showing a 2023-24 gain that ranked Camden's growth tenth-fastest in the state. If you've lived here more than a few years, you don't need a statistic to know traffic on Broad has changed. But it's the number that explains why a brewery, a new restaurant scene in nearby Lexington, and a packed festival calendar are all landing in the same 18-month window.
For music without a ticket, the free Town Green concert series runs on select Thursday evenings, 6 to 8:30 p.m. The series is a partnership between the Downtown Camden Cultural District and the Arts Center of Kershaw County that brings local and regional acts to the green, and it's a bring-a-blanket-or-lawn-chair setup where beer and wine are allowed but no glass containers. For a quieter evening between festivals, Historic Camden's own calendar runs deep. Between the pirate weekend and the Southern Gothic overlap, the site hosts a Folklore & Legends Lantern Tour on August 27, English Country Dancing on September 17, and a Colonial Cooking Class earlier in August. If you have out-of-town family visiting during any of the marquee weekends, the lantern tours are the reliable answer to "what should we do at night."
The One Piece Of Local Advice
Here is the thing a first-fall resident learns the hard way. Between October 10 and October 12, downtown parking near Broad and Rutledge disappears. The Horse & Hound crowd stays at the racecourse and the polo field, but the Southern Gothic crowd is entirely on foot downtown, and Sunday polo draws its own traffic pattern out toward the Camden Polo Field. If you live within walking distance of downtown, you already have the best seat in the county. If you don't, arrive earlier than you think you need to on Saturday, and don't try to circle back to your car between the Expo at Springdale and dinner downtown. Pick one side of the weekend to drive to and the other to walk to.
That is the practical version of the thesis. Camden's fall doesn't reward the person with the biggest calendar. It rewards the person who understands how one weekend uses the whole town at once.
